DISC BULGE
WHAT IS IT?
DISCAL BULGING occurs when the intervertebral disc begins to protrude slightly outward from its normal position without rupturing the fibrous ring that surrounds it. This condition is considered a milder degenerative form compared to a herniated disc but can progress if left untreated. Often, bulging is asymptomatic; however, in some cases, the pressure exerted on the nerves can cause discomfort and pain. It is important to monitor this condition to avoid future complications.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
-
Irradiation along the path corresponding to the compressed nerve root
-
Mild and constant pain in the back or neck (depending on the affected area)
-
Stiffness in the spine
-
Tingling or numbness that may radiate to the arms or legs
-
In more severe cases, muscle weakness.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?
-
Repetitive movements
-
Incorrect posture
-
Hereditary factors
-
Aging (i.e., the degenerative process caused by the rupture of the fibrous ring fibers)
-
Overweight and obesity
-
Trauma or injuries that cause pressure on the discs
-
Sedentary lifestyle and lack of muscle strengthening.
