CERVICAL DISC HERNIATION

WHAT IS IT?

CERVICAL DISC HERNIATION occurs in the upper part of the spine, affecting the discs between the vertebrae in the neck. This condition is characterized by the displacement of the gelatinous material from the intervertebral disc beyond its normal position, which can compress the nerve roots or the cervical spinal cord. Symptoms include neck pain that may radiate to the arms and hands, tingling, muscle weakness, and, in more severe cases, difficulties in walking or coordinating movements. The highest incidence of cervical disc herniations is between the C6 and C7 vertebrae; however, symptoms may be similar at any level of the cervical spine, varying according to the degree of compression.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

  • Neck pain

  • Pain radiating to the shoulders, arms, and hands

  • Tingling and numbness in the shoulders, arms, and hands

  • In more severe cases, there may also be loss of muscle strength and difficulty moving the neck.

  •

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?

  • Repetitive movements

  • Improper posture

  • Hereditary factors

  • Aging (i.e., the degenerative process caused by the rupture of the annulus fibrosus fibers)

  • Repetitive movements
