DISC PROTUSION
WHAT IS IT?
A DISK PROTRUSION is a more advanced condition than bulging, characterized by a significant displacement of the material from the disk nucleus outward from its normal position, although it still does not involve a complete rupture of the fibrous ring. This protrusion can exert pressure on adjacent nerves, resulting in more intense and specific symptoms such as pain, tingling, and weakness in the affected areas.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
-
Pain, numbness
-
Tingling or weakness in the muscles supplied by this nerve root
-
Localized or radiating pain, especially in the back, neck, arms, or legs
-
Pain that worsens with certain movements or when sitting for long periods
-
Muscle weakness in the arms or legs, depending on the affected area
-
In severe cases, loss of control over the bladder or intestines (sign of urgency).
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?
-
Hereditary factors
-
Aging (i.e., the degeneration process caused by the rupture of the fibers of the fibrous ring)
-
Repetitive movements
-
Incorrect posture
-
Flexion and rotation movements of the trunk
-
Trauma, such as falls or accidents
-
Improper lifting of heavy objects
-
Sedentary lifestyle and weakness in the supporting muscles of the spine.
